While the Chooser remains as part of Fortissimo, the release sports a handy new Network Control Panel. A similar version of the forthcoming network management device appeared in previous prerelease builds of Mac OS 9.0, but was later scrapped before the system hit beta.
The new Network Control Panel acts as a repository for the user's connection, dialup and services preferences. For instance, Modem and PPP settings are grouped and displayed in the 'Dial-ups' tab, while AppleTalk and DNS are stored under the connections tab of the control panel.
Rumor also has it that versions of the alpha 4 build have included a new beta Aqua theme that functions under Mac OS 9.0 and will alter Mac OS 9.0's appearance to one that is reminiscent of Mac OS X. However, sources have confirmed that the standard developer build of the client OS does not appear to contain this new theme.
Apple has indeed rewritten their much-outdated General Controls panel for Carbon compliance, but the panels options remain entirely the same, without any additions. The panel now sports a richer platinum-scheme that conforms much better to the Mac OS 9 interface.
The company is currently seeding Fortissimo in full 250 plus megabyte install image, as opposed to slim updater. There is no official word from Apple pertaining to the cost of Mac OS 9.1 when it does arrive, however, sources currently regard the update as tie to loose ends, rather than a feature packed update.
